Spurs Vs Blackburn

author: trigger99

Blackburn came to visit White Hart Lane yesterday and with them returned former Spurs Forum Player of The Year Paul Robinson. His first return since leaving us in the summer saw him return to cheers from the crowd at his every touch of the ball.

His first significant touch was to pick the ball out of the back of his own net however which led to the biggest cheer of the whole game. The first and only goal of the game scored by Roman Pavlyuchenko was a result of a a fantastic run from Man of the Match Aaron Lennon. Lennon put in his best performance of the season out on the right wing and tortured Rover right back Martin Olsson to the point of him receiving two yellow cards and leaving the field early. While Bentley was stuck out on the left wing spurs were stuck with Jermain Jenas in the middle. While some of the vice-captains runs were exciting, they lacked any end product.

A ten man Rovers went from 4-4-2 to 4-4-1 at half time with the substitution of striker Benni McArthy and the sending off of Olsson. But were lucky not to slip to 3-4-1 with Ooijer joining his team mate in the second half. Ooijer swiped Bentley’s legs away near the penalty box to earn a yellow card, and ‘Arry saw this as a chance to earn an extra man’s advantage so put Lennon onto the left hoping he could give Ooijer similar treatment to that which saw Olsson receive his two bookings. This did not prove fruitful with Ooijer staying closer to Lennon and thus not giving him the luxury of space with which to draw the foul, and when Bentley was eventually subbed for O’Hara Lennon switched back to the right wing.

Late on a minor scuffle broke out when Jenas fouled near the halfway line, his leg trapped he pulled it free only to be confronted by Simpson. With refferee Howard Webb only three feet away both players could have come off worse than a booking.

Man of the Match - Aaron Lennon, thrived on the space that Blackburn allowed him to have, and ran thier defence ragged as a result.

Spurs Sporting Director Damien Comolli told BBC Sport, “Whenever you enter a competition, you are confident you will do well. I am sure we will improve in the Premier League and can use the Uefa Cup to get our confidence back.”

Spurs 0 - 0 Wigan Athletic

Spurs remain winless five games into the league campaign after a drab 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane on Sunday.  The win against Wislaw Krakow in the UEFA Cup failed to provide the platform for a more accomplished performance and Tottenham remain at the foot of the table.

A Darren Bent chance was the only bright spot for Spurs in a first period which will not linger in the memory.  Rousing support and the introduction of Frazier Campbell saw an improved display early in the second half.  However, with chances again few and far between and the game becoming increasingly stretched the visitors were always in the game.

Substitute Aaron Lennon caused problems for Wigan from the moment he came on.  Strong penalty claims were turned down and a shot flashed wide when perhaps a touch more composure would have seen him finish.

Neither side really deserved the points, a state of affairs that should concern Spurs more than the Latics.  With tricky ties in the Carling and UEFA Cups on the horizon, Tottenham need to find some momentum quickly.

Spurs 1 -2 Aston Villa

Another hugely disappointing performance left Spurs rooted to the foot of the nascent Premier League table, the only top flight club without a league win this season.

The visitors set about their task well and went ahead early.  Good work from Ashley Young left Agbonlahor free to send in a low, dangerous cross.  After Carew, in acres of space, flicked on Nigel Reo-Coker had the simplest of tasks to score.

Despite having plenty of the ball Tottenham looked short on ideas and failed to test Brad Freidel.  Luka Modric departed to be replaced by Jermaine Jenas and immediately Spurs looked livelier but chances were still at a premium.

Half time saw the introduction of David Bentley and Spurs, again with the weight of possession, pushed on for an equaliser.  However, after some great work by Gareth Barry saw him escape from a tight spot deep in his own half, Ashley Young bought a ticket and won the raffle.  Heurelho Gomes badly at fault and Villa two goals to the good.  Having made two world class saves in the first period, it was harsh on the Spurs’ keeper.

Aaron Lennon went close and Spurs pulled one back through a fortunate Darren Bent goal, but the performance lacked lustre throughout and Villa were worthy winners on the night.  Neither Vedran Corluka or Roman Pavlyuchenko will be able to look back on their Tottenham debuts with any fondness.
